Stadium Utility Separation

SourceBlue/Ferguson Electric

Overview

The old stadium was shutting down while the new one was being built, but the old offices and training facilities were still in use. The new stadium required Uninterrupted Power Supplies to support not only day to day power, but broadcasting and game day event success as well.

The Problem

The old switchgear was aging and unreliable. It couldn’t disconnect from the old stadium while keeping the offices and training facilities running. While UPS systems are a common way to provide clean power and battery backup, the project engineer wanted to put the UPS systems and the switchgear in a very tiny block building.

The Solution

We worked with the project’s purchasing company to provide all the equipment the stadium needed. We also worked with the engineer to design a switchgear setup that allowed them to turn off the stadium while keeping the office and training facilities on. And we made sure all of it fit within the extremely tiny footprint they wanted.

The Result

We delivered the equipment and the customer has since installed and tested it along with our Schneider field service team. Now they can decouple the old stadium whenever they’re ready. The UPS systems are up and running, providing clean power and backup when needed.

Specs

  • (16) APC/Schneider Electric Galaxy VS systems ranging from 20-100kVA to support 3-PH power for the new stadium
  • Power comes in at 34.5 kV to a 3-Section Line-up of 38kV Class Metal-Enclosed Switchgear complete with an incoming termination section and (2) outgoing feeder breaker sections each with an SEL-751 feeder protection relay and an SEL-735 meter.
  • A 3000/3990kVA Cast Coil transformer with a primary voltage of 34500/19920Y and a secondary voltage of 12470/7200Y steps that power down
  • Then a 6-Section Line-up of 15kV Class Metal-Enclosed Switchgear complete with an incoming termination section, a main switch and fuse section with SM-5 fuses, a CT/PT section for customer metering and (3) outgoing fused feeder switch sections each with SM-5 fusing sends power out to the existing buildings on the old site
